The University of the Green Mountains

The University of Vermont’s hilltop campus looks out across one of America’s most vibrant small cities to Lake Champlain and the Adirondack Mountains beyond. Here students’ educational experience and activities are enriched by our location—from the energy and innovation of Burlington to the forests, farms, and independent spirit of Vermont.

UVM is a research university of a perfect size: large enough to offer a breadth of ideas, resources, and opportunities yet small enough to enable close student-faculty mentorship. With a commitment to undergraduate education, our professors—world-class researchers, scholars, and artists—bring their discoveries into the classroom and their students into the field.

Our students are empowered to dig into the most pressing issues of our time, studying the effects of climate change aboard the Melosira, our research vessel and floating lab; testing new vaccines at our on-campus medical center; launching local start-ups; and working with refugees at Burlington community centers.

On our campus, the doctor is in and ready to teach
A world-class medical school right on our campus means it’s not uncommon to see students walking out of their residence hall and straight into our medical center for some hands-on training. Our Premedical Enhancement Program, or PEP, matches students with practicing physicians for one-on-one mentoring. It’s training that gives our students a leg up when applying to medical school—at our own Larner College of Medicine, where PEP students are guaranteed an interview (pending MCAT score), and at top medical schools nationwide. UVM students have a 64% med school admit rate, compared to a 42% national rate.

Discovery rising
A new facility, “Discovery,” home to state-of-the-art teaching and research laboratories, opened in 2017. It’s part of a new STEM complex fueling groundbreaking research in science, technology, engineering, and math underway at UVM. Research like engineering a way to heal lungs with a Band-Aid made from seaweed. Measuring humanity’s happiness millions of tweets at a time. And creating the world’s tiniest wrench—just under two nanometers wide—for manipulating single molecules.

Set your sights
As students explore their passions, there’s support along the way—from study abroad opportunities to funding for research and internships to an office dedicated to helping students land once-in-a-lifetime opportunities after graduation. The Office of Fellowships Advising counsels students through the process of applying for competitive scholarships like Fulbright and Rhodes. Over the past five years, more than 100 UVM students have won or been finalists for prestigious awards like these.

Wherever you see yourself after college, UVM will help you get there. Our four-year plan for career success shows you all the steps to take in each year to land a great job after graduation or continue your studies in graduate school. Within six months of graduating, 92% of UVM students are employed or continuing their education, and 95% of those employed are in a position related to their career goals. Our students launch with the skills needed to create success for themselves and to lead humankind toward a better future.

We’d love to hear from you.

Live and Learn

Next door to the medical center, our new residence hall is home to another kind of Wellness Environment: our innovative learning community that’s drawing national headlines. In WE, students live with others dedicated to building healthy brains and healthy bodies through four research-proven pillars of wellness: fitness, nutrition, mindfulness, and mentorship. Students in the program take a course with Dr. Jim Hudziak, a leading pediatric psychiatrist, who teaches the neuroscience behind how healthy behaviors actually transform the brain.

You’ll find learning communities in each of our residence halls. Live and study with friends interested in the arts, the environment, global cultures, and civic engagement. And our Honors College provides a residential space for some of our most capable students from across all academic programs.
