The birthplace of public higher education in America

The University of Georgia is committed to student excellence through rigorous learning experiences both inside and outside the classroom. As the largest public university in the US to require every student to participate in experiential learning before graduation, UGA encourages students to learn new things and experience them too. Experiential learning is one of the many opportunities for students to chase their passions in Athens, Georgia, and can look like anything from conducting undergraduate research through the Center for Undergraduate Research Opportunities (CURO) to serving the community through the UGA Campus Kitchen.

These experiences are just a few of the many that contribute to the University’s exceptional retention, graduation, and career placement rates, which are consistently well above the national average—including a 95% first-year retention rate. Chartered by the state of Georgia in 1785, the University of Georgia is the state's flagship institution and the birthplace of public higher education in America—launching our nation’s great tradition of world-class public education. With 235 years of leadership in education, it’s no wonder UGA has been one of the nation’s top three producers of Rhodes Scholars over the past two decades and hosts an honors program ranked as one of the top 10 in the country.

When students pass the Arch and join the Bulldog family, they embark on much more than just a path to a degree—they join an expansive network of innovators, creators, and leaders who are making a global impact. By attending the University of Georgia, students choose a group of people, an atmosphere, and an experience that will guide their next steps in life.
