Located in New Haven, Connecticut, this public university offers 117 undergraduate and graduate programs, unique research opportunities, access to fascinating internships, a vibrant campus, and a commitment to preparing strong leaders.

A growing campus
Southern continues to develop its modern 172-acre campus with dramatic new additions and enhancements, such as the new 103,608-sq. ft. science building that houses teaching and research laboratories for its STEM programs. Embracing an innovative, sustainable design, the building is home to nanotechnology, physics and optics, cancer research, marine and coastal studies, astronomy, and other sciences.

A 135,000-sq. ft. addition to Buley Library, coupled with a total renovation of the original building, has doubled the size of the library’s footprint. The University’s master plan also calls for a new building to house Southern’s Health and Human Services programs and a new building for the School of Business.

A student-centered university
Southern understands the tremendous power of education and its ability to transform lives. The campus has a vibrant, culturally rich, and ethnically diverse environment. The faculty and staff are a talented, dedicated group of people whose first priority is to educate and assist students. Southern students are inspired by the research, scholarship, and creative activity of our professors.

Undergraduate students have the opportunity to conduct research under the mentorship of engaged faculty, and in many cases, to partner with them on research projects, many times resulting in coauthored academic papers and shared presentations at national conferences. Hands-on research opportunities allow you to explore potential career paths and develop close relationships with faculty who can serve as references.

In addition to its extensive academic offerings, Southern offers a wide array of academic support services to strengthen and enrich the classroom experience and help students meet academic and career goals.

Reflecting our diverse world
At Southern, we are committed to academic excellence, access, social justice, and service for the public good. Each and every day, we encourage our students, faculty, staff, and alumni to consider our individual roles in challenging injustice, valuing diversity, and creating a climate of inclusion. We’re driven by our mission to foster a culture enriched by academic excellence, access, social justice, and service for the public good.

Student life
One of the great things about Southern is the energy on campus. Southern offers a wide range of services and programs for students to motivate and enrich their learning and contribute to their individual growth. Recognizing that much learning occurs beyond the physical boundaries of the classroom, we dedicate ourselves to maximizing the fullest potential of both the individual and the campus community.

Students who balance their academic work with cocurricular activities are more inclined to achieve success in academic and other pursuits, create opportunities for personal development, and be better prepared for life after graduation. Southern’s many campus clubs and organizations provide rich educational, social, leadership, and cultural opportunities on and off campus. Cultural events are planned through the Office of International Education, and we offer 19 highly competitive NCAA Division II men’s and women’s athletic teams.

Achieving successful outcomes
Completing a degree and preparing for today’s job market requires students to be well prepared, creative, and able to use a variety of programs and services to develop necessary skills.

Southern’s Academic Advising Center works with students to help envision the connection between their present academic experience and future plans. All students are matched with an academic advisor, and our goal is to broaden students’ perspectives with respect to their career choices.

From study abroad and advanced research opportunities to service learning and internships, Southern students gain outstanding experience and great preparation for their careers.
