Undergrad Visual Arts

New York City’s college for creative and business talent

Occupying an entire block in New York City, FIT places you at the heart of the fashion, advertising, visual arts, design, business, and communication industries. A State University of New York (SUNY) college of art and design, business, technology, and the liberal arts, FIT offers programs leading to Associate of Applied Science (AAS), Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA), and Bachelor of Science (BS) degrees, all based on a blend of career-oriented studies and a solid liberal arts foundation.

Range of majors
You can select from a wide range of major study areas, from Design and Fashion to Advertising and Marketing Communications to International Business. Each distinct major combines the practical and theoretical, provides hands-on learning, and prepares you for the professional world. They reflect FIT’s unique and stimulating learning environment, which is alive with energy and filled with talented students and dedicated faculty who are also influential working professionals—business owners, designers, artists, and more. With class sizes limited to 25 students and a student-faculty ratio of 16:1, you’ll receive the kind of individual attention that will help you shine.

Presidential Scholars
High-achieving high school seniors are eligible to apply for the Presidential Scholars honors program. Scholars will take specially designed liberal arts courses and participate in extracurricular art and cultural activities.

Liberal arts
In addition to Art History & Museum Professions and the Film & Media majors in the School of Liberal Arts, FIT’s foundation courses are creatively adapted to the needs of particular majors. Over 30 liberal arts  minors are designed to balance each major’s special emphasis. Studying the liberal arts at FIT means honing skills in communication and critical thinking, gaining an in-depth understanding of humanities and natural and social sciences, and exploring the complexities of world cultures. This solid education will not only become the foundation for a great career—it will go far toward helping you grow into a more well-rounded and creative person.

Campus life
Campus life is dynamic and vital. While many FIT students commute to campus, 2,160 undergraduate students call FIT home, choosing from traditional or apartment-style rooms in one of our four residence halls. The David Dubinsky Student Center houses a state-of-the-art fitness center, a student radio station, the Style Shop (an FIT student–run boutique), a dance studio, laboratories, Barnes & Noble, Starbucks, student government and club offices, and a counseling center. FIT has 10 intercollegiate teams, and you can choose from more than 60 student clubs and organizations.

New York City
Being an FIT student means having tremendous opportunities to learn, play, and explore the abundance of New York City from your home base in the lively Chelsea neighborhood. The city is our playground, our muse, and our extended campus. With theater, live music, galleries, museums, restaurants, and shopping, the city offers unparalleled opportunities to explore.

Internships and placement rates
FIT’s innovative approach to experiential learning—through professional critiques, industry-sponsored competitions, and internships—is the key to your future success. While our classroom dynamics reflect the real-world activities and attitudes of the showrooms, studios, or corporate offices in which you’ll one day work, our extensive internship program offers invaluable on-site experience with leading retailers, manufacturers, designers, ad agencies, radio and television networks, and consumer magazines.

Through internships, we set the stage for passing on our connections and industry partnerships—and open the door for you to forge valuable relationships of your own. Nearly one-third of FIT student interns are offered employment when they complete their internships.
