Located in the heart of Detroit, students at Wayne State University have many opportunities to gain real-world experience while pursing health science and medical careers. Our beginnings are rooted in medicine with the 1868 establishment of the Detroit Medical College, now known as the Wayne State University School of Medicine. This extensive history has created a solid foundation for innovation in academics, research, and patient care. The College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, Eugene Applebaum College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences, College of Nursing, and College of Education provide the groundwork for academic and experiential training to prepare students across a range of health fields.

College of Liberal Arts & Sciences
Being committed to improving the health and vitality of Detroit, graduates of the Public Health major and minor will have the ability to assess and prevent health disparities across the city and beyond, as well as diagnose and research public health problems, improve public health through human and environmental interventions, promote individual well-being, and educate the public regarding healthful choices in life. Students can also prepare for pre-professional programs by studying Biological Sciences, Neuroscience, Nutrition and Food Science, Psychology, and 15 other areas.

College of Nursing
The College of Nursing is committed to providing a world-class educational experience through BSN, MSN, PhD, DNP, and graduate certificate programs. A dedication to student success and a state-of-the-art learning environment combine to produce graduates who are prepared to be nurse leaders in research, education, and practice. Faculty and students serve Detroit’s diverse populations while promoting community and urban health.

Eugene Applebaum College of Pharmacy & Health Sciences (EACPHS)
Established in 1924, the Eugene Applebaum College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences is one of the founding colleges of WSU. It is committed to advancing the health and well-being of the community through the education and professional development of highly skilled health care practitioners. Our programs focus on discovering, evaluating, and implementing improved models of practice and treatment in pharmacy and the health sciences through research by offering 11 degree programs in areas including Occupational Therapy, Physical Therapy, and Mortuary Science.

College of Education—Exercise & Sport Science and Community Health Education
The Exercise and Sport Science undergraduate program is a discipline encompassing several distinct areas, including biomechanics, exercise physiology, motor behavior, and sport and exercise psychology. Students will develop knowledge and skills in sport and fitness activities, apply knowledge about human movement systems, and analyze and evaluate human performance of individuals in various age groups and fitness levels. Community Health Education is an interdisciplinary social science designed to promote health and prevent disease, disability, and premature death by educating individuals and communities to voluntarily change their behaviors, policies, and practices. Community Health Education Specialists design, implement, and evaluate health education and promotion programs at the individual, group, institutional, community, and system levels to improve health knowledge, attitudes, skills, and behavior.

Pre-med and Health Science Center (PMHSC)
WSU’s PMHSC provides prerequisite advising, academic support, and professional development strategies for all WSU students pursuing admission to competitive health care programs. Pre-health advisors work with you to discuss degree options and help you plan your prerequisite coursework. In addition, pre-health advisors are knowledgeable in professional preparation that medical programs value, such as extracurricular experiences, leadership, service, and health care exposure. We will challenge you to develop a strong portfolio of engagement while maintaining the high standards of academic excellence that you need to compete in the admission process.

Undergraduate research
Participating in research activities is a unique opportunity for students to work with faculty. Some students will work on part of a faculty member’s current project, while others may develop an independent project guided by a faculty member. The Undergraduate Research Opportunities Program (UROP) invites students from disciplines across the University—physical, life, and social sciences and humanities—to engage in original, hands-on research and creative projects. Wayne State maintains affiliations with the Detroit Medical Center and Henry Ford Health System, offering students unparalleled access to health care training at nationally recognized health facilities.

Investing in health equity
Wayne State University is home to IBio, a $90 million facility dedicated to eliminating health disparities in Detroit. This broad Integrative Biosciences Initiative (IBio) is dedicated to research, discovery, education, training, and knowledge application across a range of biomedical challenges.

To help prepare our students to become leaders in the medical community, we offer the Wayne Med-Direct program. This unique BS/BA-to-MD program offers admission and free tuition to the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences and Wayne State School of Medicine, and provides community service and clinical experience training to prepare these students to reduce urban health disparities in their communities.
