Be Prepared to Lead and Thrive in a Complex World

As a student in Concordia University Irvine’s School of Arts & Sciences, you will first encounter what we mean by cross-disciplinary thinking in our distinctive general education, called Enduring Questions & Ideas. As you wrestle with these “Great Questions,” you’ll start to make connections not only within the fields of natural science, engineering, mathematics, kinesiology, and sports science, but also across different subject matters and with your own callings in life. It’s this type of curiosity, testing, problem solving, and inventing that is at the heart of the scientific method and allows you to understand the interaction of your faith and your chosen field of study.

A commitment to research and research design
Our students are trained in experimental design, proposal writing and submission, real world constraints on data collection, statistical data analysis, and a variety of other research protocols. Our goal is to provide an experience that gives you the flexibility to design a research project motivated by your own interests, carry out that experiment, and then write up the results of the research in a refereed journal format.

On-campus facilities dedicated to advanced instruction and undergraduate research
The Marine Lab was founded to provide a valuable resource for educational outreach, undergraduate classes, and student and faculty research. The Marine Lab facility consists of a ~2,000 gallon recirculating seawater system that includes a dozen various aquaria ranging from 50 to 400 gallons each and is home to over 50 species of temperate marine organisms (mostly local species) ranging from jelly-fish to sharks. The Heritage Garden is a 5-acre garden and aims to bless others by cultivating a space for students, faculty, staff, and community to lead, to learn, and to serve, including community service events. Harvested fruits and vegetables are donated to the University’s café.

An Inside Look

What students are saying about us...

  • “What I loved about getting a degree in biology at CUI was the support and commitment that professors had in my education. One of the benefits of getting a scientific education from a Christian liberal arts school was the opportunity to learn how to mix the world of theology with that of the natural sciences, and that despite what most people believe, these two worlds don't contradict each other.”

    • Cecilia Eiroa Lledo '15
  • “The professors were extremely knowledgeable and helpful. They were all passionate about the course material they were teaching and made the class interesting.”

    • Chrissie McNab '13
  • “I valued the personal relationships with the professors. There was deeper communication and understanding of the subjects because the professor could relate to experiences and personalities of the entire class.”
