Health & Medicine Profile

Medical school admission is competitive.

For students like Patrick Vecellio '16, the challenge of med school admission was easier to face because of the immersive John Carroll University Pre-health experience. As a Pre-health student, Patrick had access to a team who helped him map out course selections, understand career paths, gain relevant experience, and apply to medical school. While his friends at larger state schools were struggling to find faculty, Patrick had a personal team assembled for him through the Health Professions Advisory Committee.

Your health career starts now
John Carroll’s location in the heart of an important health care hub provides the access to internships, research opportunities, and alumni connections needed to guide your career. Cleveland is home to three major hospital systems, including the world-renowned Cleveland Clinic. Each year, our special partnership with the Clinic allows many of students to intern in areas such as medical and scientific research, autism care, health care information technology, and more. Additionally, we’ll help you leverage our extensive alumni network to spend time with dedicated professionals shadowing, doing research, and gaining valuable insight.

Educating the whole person
A medical professional trained in the liberal arts has one particular advantage over others with only technical training: the ability to communicate effectively. Our mission is designed to educate you as a whole person—in mind, body, and spirit. We will teach you foundational skills, technological literacy, data analysis, and written and oral expression, then show you how these skills can be directly used in your future medical career.

“My service experiences, including a 10-day medical immersion trip to Honduras, provided me with an opportunity to engage with the world while developing a compassionate approach to truly help others. In a way, this was more beneficial than any textbook,” Patrick says.
